5 Day Marangu Route Itinerary

Marangu Route is the quest, the oldest and most established trekking route to get to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. It approaches Kilimanjaro from southeast side crossing the slopes via a variety of fascinating landscapes including moorland and forest, before changing to alpine and arctic. Many favor this route as it is considered to be the easiest route due to its gradual slope and direct path to the top.

Courageous trekkers are housed in contented huts throughout this lifetime adventure. Basically, this route allows completion within five days but we can always provide an extra day of acclimatization to maximize the chance of successfully summiting.

Day 1: Arusha/Moshi – Marangu Gate (1980m/6496ft) to Mandara Hut (2743m/8999ft)

After breakfast and a short briefing from the guide, you will be transferred to the gates of Kilimanjaro National Park. After registering with park authorities, you begin a 4 hour walk to the Mandara encampment. You will pass through a thick rainforest, where it usually rains in the afternoon. Night will be spent at the Mandara Hut (2743m/8999ft) where there is an attractive collection of buildings. Bathrooms are available with running water.
Most days the hiking begins early in the morning and you will hike for 5 -6 hours a day. Guides will go at a moderate pace, giving you time to acclimatize to the altitude changes.

The lower terrain is stunning, as you pass through a thick rainforest zone, stopping at the Mandara Hut. Over the next two days you will continue your ascent to the saddle of Kilimanjaro. From this point onwards, views are, fascinatingly beautiful and vast. As the camps have limited activities, you should take advantage of your time on the hikes going pole pole (slowly) to take in all of the scenery and outstanding views.

Day 2: Mandara Hut (2700m/8858ft) to Horombo Hut (3720m/12204ft)
Hiking Time: 6 hrs.
The ascent continues through the temperate forest zone, before reaching the heather and moorland zone (3000m/9842ft). You will enjoy views of the mountain peaks at this altitude. The night will be spent at Horombo Hut (3720m/12204ft), lying in a valley surrounded by giant groundsel and lobelia, flora characteristic of this semi-alpine zone. Bathrooms are available with running water.

Day 3: Horombo Hut (3720m/12204ft) to Kibo Hut (4703m/15429ft)
Hiking Time: 6 hrs.
Continue past the final watering point and ascend onto the saddle of Kilimanjaro between Kibo and Mwenzi peaks. You will notice the vegetation thinning out as you enter the desert-like alpine zone (4000m/13123ft). After crossing the saddle, Kibo peak comes into view. The saddle is an alpine desert, resembling the lunar landscape. This walk will go at a slow pace. At this point, notice signs of altitude sickness. You will spend the night at Kibo Hut (4703m/1529ft), a comfortable stone construction with no running water. This semi-desert zone receives annual marangu-routerainfall under 250mm. The ground often freezes at night, but the temperature rises above 30 degrees by day. Few plants other than grasses and grass can grow in these conditions.

Day 4: Day Four: Kibo Hut (4700m/15419ft) to Summit (3720m/12204ft) via Horombo Hut (5895m/19340ft)
Hiking Time: 14 hrs.
Just after midnight, you begin your climb to Kilimanjaro’s summit, as it is easier to climb the scree slope to Gillman’s Point (5861m/19228ft) on the crater rim when it is frozen. This early start improves the chances of reaching the summit in time for sunrise. From Gilman’s Point, it is a 3 hour round trip along the crater’s edge to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. How high you go depends on how you feel. After summiting, your guide will lead you to your decent quickly, taking you down to Horombo Hut to spend your last night on the mountain.

Day 5: Descent – Horombo Hut (3720m/12204ft) to Marangu Gate Moshi (1980m/6496ft)
Hiking Time: 6hrs
Your descent will continue past the Mandara encampment to the bottom of the mountain. Each hiker will receive their certificate. Thereafter you will be transferred by shuttle bus to Moshi/ Arusha and spend the night in a warmth and comfort hotel.
